Understanding the Exam

What exactly is the DGCA RTR exam?

Before you start, understand what you're preparing for — two distinct parts, each with a different format.

RTR Part 1 — Theory

A written examination covering ICAO radiotelephony theory. Tests your knowledge of standard phraseology, phonetic alphabet, transmission techniques, emergency signals, METAR decoding and aviation regulations governing radio communication.

Written examMultiple choiceTheory based23 topics

RTR Part 2 — Practical

A live oral examination. The examiner plays the role of ATC and you respond as the pilot. You're given a scenario with fixed flight data — registration, route, frequencies, weather — and must communicate correctly across all 6 phases of a flight.

Oral examLive simulation6 flight phasesICAO DOC 9432

What Part 2 Tests

You'll be examined on: pushback and startup, taxi clearance, ATC departure clearance, takeoff, position reports, relay messages, weather deviations, TCAS RA calls, emergency procedures (PAN PAN / MAYDAY), approach, landing and parking — all in ICAO-correct format.

MAYDAY / PAN PANPosition reportsRelay messagesTCAS RA

Common Failure Reasons

Most candidates fail Part 2 because they've never spoken the transmissions aloud before the exam. Reading theory is not enough — you need to practice saying the words in sequence, under time pressure, with the correct callsigns and data from the scenario.

Exam Tips

What examiners actually look for.

Things that separate a pass from a fail in RTR Part 2 — from the people who've seen both.

Say it out loud — always Silent reading won't prepare your mouth. The exam is spoken. Practice every transmission verbally, even alone.
Use the correct callsign The scenario gives you a registration — use it every single time. Wrong callsign is an automatic red flag.
Readbacks are mandatory ATC instructions must be read back. Missing a readback — especially for runway clearances — is a critical error.
Learn emergency preambles cold MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY and PAN PAN PAN PAN PAN PAN must come out automatically, without hesitation. Memorise them.
Read the METAR before starting Examiners ask you to decode METAR. Know QNH, visibility, cloud base, wind — they'll expect you to use these in context.
Transmit numbers correctly FL330 = "Flight Level Tree Tree Zero". 121.5 = "One Two One Decimal Five". Wrong number transmission is a common fail point.
Know your route waypoints Position reports require current position, next waypoint and ETA. Study the route in the scenario before the exam starts.
Pace yourself Don't rush. Speak at conversation speed. Examiners prefer deliberate, accurate transmissions over fast, garbled ones.
Complete the scenario in sequence The exam follows a logical flight sequence. If you lose track of where you are in the flight, re-anchor using the question number.

Frequently Asked

Questions students ask us.

Everything you need to know before you start preparing.

The DGCA RTR (Radio Telephony Restricted) licence is mandatory for all pilots who operate aircraft in India — student pilots, CPL holders and ATPL holders all require it. It tests your ability to communicate correctly on aviation radio frequencies following ICAO DOC 9432 procedures. Without it, you cannot legally operate an aircraft radio in Indian airspace.
With focused daily study of 1–2 hours, most students are exam-ready in 25–30 days. Part 1 theory takes about a week. Transmission formats take another 5 days. Part 2 simulator practice takes 10 days. Pro Scenarios and a mock test fill the final week. Consistency matters more than intensity — daily practice is significantly more effective than weekend cramming.
Part 1 is a written theory examination — MCQ format — covering ICAO regulations, phraseology, phonetic alphabet, frequency usage, METAR decoding and emergency signal theory. Part 2 is a practical oral examination where you speak RT transmissions in a live simulated flight. Both must be cleared to obtain the RTR licence. AIVR covers both comprehensively.
AIVR offers 5 free minutes per session. Full subscription is ₹399 for 28 days, which includes RTR Part 1, Part 2, Part 2 Pro Scenarios and 10 free AIVR Points. The Combo Plan at ₹799 adds one Mock Test session (worth ₹499 separately) — saving you ₹99. All plans include auto-renewal which you can cancel anytime.
Pro Scenarios are predefined exam scenarios modelled directly on real DGCA RTR exam papers. Each scenario has a fixed aircraft registration, departure airport, destination, route, ATC frequencies, METAR weather and squawk code — exactly like the data sheet you receive in the real exam hall. After completing a scenario, the Answer Key shows the model pilot responses for every question so you can self-assess.
The AIVR Mock Test is a 1-hour live 1-on-1 RTR Part 2 simulation conducted via WhatsApp video call. Our team plays the full ATC role across all 6 flight phases — from pushback to parking — using a real scenario with fixed flight data. After the session you get feedback on every transmission where you deviated from the model answer. Slots are available daily at 8–9 PM and 9–10 PM. Price: ₹499 per session.
Yes. AIVR is fully mobile-optimised. All modules — Part 1, Part 2, Pro Scenarios and Learn Transmissions — work on any smartphone browser. The mobile navigation drawer gives access to all sections. We recommend using it in landscape mode for the Part 2 simulator to see the full flight data panel and question together.
First, identify specifically where you struggled — which phase and what type of transmission. Then: (1) revisit the Transmissions module for those formats, (2) do targeted Part 2 simulator runs focusing on those phases, (3) complete at least 3 Pro Scenarios to build fluency, and (4) book a Mock Test where you specifically flag your weak areas so we can test you harder there. Most repeat candidates clear on their second attempt with 2 weeks of structured re-preparation.
